It was declared national park in 1985 and is the seventh
national park of Croatia. Entirely situated in Sibenik – Knin County, with the
area of 109 km2 following the river Krka: 2km downstream from Knin to Skradin
and the lower flow of the river Cikola. Its function is primarily scientific,
cultural, educational and recreational, frequently visited by tourists in
favour of sightseeing it. With its seven waterfalls of 242 m the Krka is a
natural and karst phenomenon. The Krka waterfalls, as the one at Plitvice
lakes, were formed from a special kind of lime stone sedimentation. After the
magnificient falls the river flows into Prukljan lake, and then to a deep sea
straits, in which Sibenik, another historic city, is situated. Among numerous
falls especially beautiful are Skradinski buk and Roski slap, between which is
situated an islet Visovac with a Franciscan monastery.
