Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century, surrounded by 2km long
walls, built from 11th till 17th century. A codified Statute «Liber statutorum
civitatis Ragusii» was brought in 1272. The first known merchant contract was
made in 1148. The king Richard the Lionheart, on his voyage from the crusade
war in 1192, took refuge from the storm in front of Dubrovnik. To fulfill the
pledge, he donated to Dubrovnik citizens money which they used to start
building the cathedral.
